Economic Feasibility and Downtown Improvement Study
Sault Ste Marie, Ontario
2005
Project Undertaken at IBI Group
Principals of Sierra Planning undertook a study of the opportunities for revitalization of Downtown Sault Ste. Marie. The study involved a detailed assessment of opportunities for residential redevelopment, new business opportunities, the creation of a community improvement plan (CIP), urban design guidelines, other policies and funding programs to support property owners in Downtown.
The project consisted of three components:
- A Feasibility and Market Study;
- A Community Improvement Plan; and
- An Implementation Program.
As a result of this work, the City secured funding through Ontario's Rural Economic Development (RED) Program. Through the CIP, the City of Sault Ste. Marie has committed funding for business grant initiatives and programs, creating job opportunities and new investment, in addition to new applications for condominium residential development (to be incentivised by tax grants) and phased implementation of transportation infrastructure improvements, streetscape and parkland additions.
Status: Incentive programs in force; phased implementation of public investment plans.
